Samsung SmartThings

Connect, monitor and control your smart home — one app for 100s of brands

Project overview

SmartThings lets users connect, monitor and control hundreds of smart-home devices — Samsung TVs, appliances and speakers, plus third-party brands like Ring, Nest and Philips Hue — from a single iOS app, including live camera viewing.

Problem statement

Smart homes span dozens of brands and device types, each with its own app and onboarding flow, making it hard for users to set up and control everything — especially live camera feeds — in one place.

Solution

A unified iOS experience for onboarding and controlling connected devices across hundreds of smart-home brands, with a dedicated LIVE Camera experience for real-time viewing of connected cameras.

Architecture used

Native iOS (Objective-C / Swift, UIKit) with a modular feature structure, IoT cloud / REST integration, push notifications and real-time camera streaming via AVFoundation.

My contributions

Worked as a Samsung consultant (via Integra Micro Systems) on the iOS app — specifically the LIVE Camera experience, enabling real-time viewing of connected camera feeds — along with smart-device onboarding and connected-device modules. Recognized as Best Employee of the Month.

Challenges & solutions

Delivering smooth, low-latency live camera streaming on iOS across varied network conditions and a wide range of connected camera hardware.

Lessons learned

Real-time media on mobile demands careful handling of streaming, buffering and lifecycle/permission edge cases to feel instant and reliable.
