Free Norwegian short films & documentaries, streamed through your local library
Project overview
Filmbib is a distribution portal for Norwegian short films and documentaries, administered by the Norwegian Film Institute on behalf of the Ministry of Culture. It gives the Norwegian public free access to a curated selection of Norwegian shorts and documentaries through their local library — users sign in with their national library card number and PIN to browse and stream content.
Problem statement
High-quality Norwegian short films and documentaries are hard for the general public to discover and watch, and tying access to a trusted, free, library-backed channel adds authentication and content-delivery complexity.
Solution
An Android app that streams a curated, publicly funded catalogue of Norwegian shorts and documentaries for free, with login via national library card and PIN — making cultural content easy to browse and watch on mobile.
Architecture used
Native Android app built in Kotlin with REST API integration for the content catalogue, library-card authentication, and in-app video streaming and playback.
My contributions
Android developer on Filmbib (Pixlo AB) — building the catalogue browsing, library-card authentication and video playback experience natively in Kotlin.
Challenges & solutions
Delivering smooth, reliable streaming of a curated film catalogue while integrating with a national library-card authentication flow.
Lessons learned
Pairing a trusted, free distribution model with frictionless streaming makes publicly funded culture genuinely accessible on mobile.
